Portable appliance testing, more commonly known as a PAT test or portable appliance test and more recently electrical equipment test (EET), is essentially a way of checking your electrical appliances through using visual checks and electronic testing. It is essential companies, holiday let owners and landlords ensure their electrical items are safe for staff or their tenants. While there is currently no legal requirement for a PAT test to be carried out, there are legal obligations on landlords in their rental properties and on employers to ensure electrical appliance safety.

There are three categories of electrical items: Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3.

-
Class 1 appliances need a full PAT test and are typically everyday items you find and use in either homes or office buildings. These include chargers, kettles, toasters, photocopiers, printers, extension leads, laptop cables and fridges/freezers as well as many other items.
-
Class 2 appliances need a PAT insulation test as they typically have extra insulation and include items such as TVs, hairdryers, lamps and desktop printers.
-
Class 3 appliances do not need to be electronically tested and include objects such as cameras, torches and laptops. This is because these items present the lowest risk. However they are given visual checks as part of the PAT test.

After a PAT test, a 'Pass' or 'Fail' label is then applied to the item in a visible location. Any items marked as a 'Fail' should not be used and should either be repaired by a qualified electrician or engineer or replaced.

After the PAT testing is complete, we will provide you with a report. PAT testing is also available to businesses and their premises.

*Please note there is a minimum charge of £50 for PAT testing as a standalone service.
